Sisonke is a sex worker led non-profit organisation advocating for the decriminalisation of adult, consented sex work in South Africa, allowing elimination of human rights violations and thereby affording sex workers, a key population an opportunity for full access to healthcare and equality before law.
Due to their criminalised social status and position, sex workers are confronted with stigma, discrimination, and gender-based femicide and sexual violence (GBVF 2019-2024). Stigma disproportionately impacts the most marginalized and criminalised, including migrant, gender, and sexual minority sex workers such as transgender and male sex workers. For example, although violence against womxn is a central issue for the women’s movement, this work often fails to address police violence, harassment, and arbitrary arrest, which continues to be a problem for sex workers in Southern Africa. This program will be solely directed to Sex work movement .
